Justin Ronberg
Justin “Iggy” Ronberg is a distinguished Aboriginal artist whose work celebrates a profound and enduring connection to Country. Raised across the Northern Territory and Central Desert regions, Justin’s early life was deeply influenced by family, culture and the captivating rhythms of the didgeridoo — a sound that continues to guide his creative expression today.
Encouraged from a young age to develop his artistic talents, Justin learned traditional techniques and the cultural meaning embedded within Aboriginal art. His painting style is characterised by warm, earthy tones and dynamic mark-making that reflect the sounds, landscapes and stories of his homeland. Each composition carries a vivid sense of place — the ochre sands, the vast desert skies, and the native wildlife that sustain and protect his people.
Justin is also an acclaimed didgeridoo performer and instructor, recognised nationally and internationally. His artworks and musical talents have featured in exhibitions, cultural festivals and tours throughout Australia, Europe and the United States. Highly collected and admired, Justin’s work serves as both a celebration of identity and an affirmation of his commitment to sharing, preserving and honouring Aboriginal culture.
This artwork centres on the Perente Goanna, a powerful totemic spirit in Central and Western Desert culture. The Goanna Dreaming is painted to pay respect to ancestral beings who shaped the land and its survival resources.
Justin depicts his Country during sunset after rainfall, a moment when life awakens throughout the desert — fresh grasses emerge and wildflowers bloom in vibrant colour beneath a glowing sky.
Throughout the composition, each animal and symbol holds deep significance:
Together, these motifs represent the interconnectedness of culture, Country and community. The artwork honours the land’s ability to provide — a reminder of ancestral teachings that emphasise respect, gratitude and sustainable living with nature.
