About the Artist

Chelsea Possum Petyarre is one of the most exciting contemporary Indigenous artists to emerge from the celebrated Utopia region of Central Australia. She is the granddaughter of the late Clifford Possum Tjapaltjarri, one of the founding figures of the Western Desert art movement and a pioneer of modern Aboriginal art.

Growing up surrounded by some of Australia’s most influential artists, Chelsea developed a deep connection to her cultural heritage and storytelling traditions from an early age. Today, she carries forward this extraordinary legacy through her own distinctive style—combining traditional iconography with a refined, contemporary aesthetic.

Her works are highly sought after by collectors for their clarity of story, balance of composition, and strong cultural lineage, making her an increasingly important name in the next generation of Aboriginal artists.

Artwork: “My Grandfather’s Country”

Meaning & Story

“My Grandfather’s Country” is a deeply personal and culturally significant body of work that honours Chelsea’s connection to her ancestral lands and the legacy of her grandfather, Clifford Possum Tjapaltjarri.

This Dreaming tells the story of Country as seen from above—mapping the landscapes, sacred sites, and journeys that define her family’s connection to land. Through intricate dot work and symbolic forms, Chelsea depicts waterholes, meeting places, and travelling pathways, each element carrying layers of meaning passed down through generations.

The painting is not just a visual representation of land—it is a living narrative. It reflects knowledge systems, survival, ceremony, and the enduring relationship between people and Country.

Artistic Style & Visual Impact

Chelsea’s work is immediately recognisable for its precision and rhythm. Her finely applied dot work creates a sense of movement across the canvas, guiding the viewer through the story as if travelling across the landscape itself.

Her use of colour—often harmonious, earthy tones contrasted with vibrant highlights—adds depth and energy, allowing the artwork to shift subtly with changing light throughout the day.

The result is a piece that is both culturally rich and visually captivating, equally at home in contemporary interiors or curated collections.

A Meaningful Acquisition

Owning a work from Chelsea Possum is more than acquiring a beautiful painting—it is an opportunity to connect with a living cultural story and be part of a continuing artistic legacy.

Her works are increasingly being recognised not only for their visual appeal but for their cultural depth, authenticity, and collectability.
