Azeza Possum Ramzan
A striking work by Azeza Possum Ramzan, Seven Sisters Dreaming brings an enduring ancestral story into a contemporary artistic vision. The daughter of Michelle Possum Nungurrayi and granddaughter of the renowned Clifford Possum Tjapaltjarri, Azeza continues a distinguished family tradition of storytelling through painting.
Now based in Melbourne, Azeza draws on traditional iconography and storytelling methods, alongside women’s ceremonial narratives and Dreamings passed down through her family. Her intricate dot work creates a richly layered surface, inviting the viewer to explore the movement, rhythm and detail of the composition.
The painting tells the story of the Seven Sisters, a powerful and widely shared narrative held and interpreted by Aboriginal communities across Australia. In this story, the sisters journey across the land and sky as they evade a pursuing man. Their journey speaks to resilience, kinship, cultural law and the protection of family and community.
Rooted in ancestral knowledge, Seven Sisters Dreaming offers a compelling visual expression of a story that continues to hold deep significance. Its intricate patterns and considered composition make this artwork a distinctive centrepiece for a home or collection.
